Shane Wilkinson is in front of me at the queue to pick up your license at the end of the weekend, and the lady says,” oh here you go, a spot prize number is on your License, have some FMF work gloves.” I am next and this being my 5th year in a row to the Taumarunui TT Champs, I was pretty sure that after getting nothing at the end of the day for the past 5 years that surely I would get something, I say my name and she hands me my license, “bye.” She says, what!?! Oh well maybe the 6th time is the charm, to rub some more salt in the wound Dave Mac is behind me and the lady says” you get a prize too.” Oh this is some kind of set up! Acky from Bike Torque is laughing that hard I thought he might spill his beer and both Dave and Shane proceed to wave their gifts in my face and keep repeating “what did you get?” and then almost skip back to the truck together, Bugger. The unbelievable thing is that every year The Mackattack comes down he always walks of with something and this is not Shane’s first gift too. Pricks, both of them.

This was at the end of weekends racing at one of the fastest places you will get to race a dirt bike, it all starts on Friday morning as we trundle through the bloody Auckland traffic we bee line it to a truck stop just out of Ngaruawahia for the pre race big breakfast. Which consists of more stuff to give you heart failure than seeing jabba the Hutt in a thong. After one of the best feeds around and resisting the urge to lick my plate and steal Shanes fried tomatoe we are back in Dave’s smurf and the never ending piss taking begins of each other and any one who gets within 10 feet of us.

We get to our motel and find out the unit we had was in fact a handicapped room, myself and Dave reckon the owners took one look at Shane and gave us that room on purpose, we also suspected that at any moment they were going to also make Shane wear a helmet at all times around the unit for insurance reasons, he just has that look about him. More so when he has a few beers in him. The only person missing was the northern Kangaroo expert and all round tea spoon collector, Ian. Never mind dude, There’s always next year. With a big feed of fish and chips next to a open roaring fire ands with a few cold ones to wash it all down, the weekend was of to a great start.

Saturday morning, God, I am not a morning person, the alarm goes off and before you know it we are all stumbling around and walking into things, and man is it cold!! But with a beanie, a hat on top, 3 shirts on and as many socks on my feet as I could fit we are on our way to the track, I was thinking of tying the oil heater to me but realized that I would have to sit on the trailer as I wouldn’t have been able to fit inside Dave’s wagon. And once again we were greeted with one of the best tracks in my opinion around, fast? How big are ya kiwi fruit? With all of the fellow Rodney boys on big bore four strokes we were in heaven. Within minutes Shane is running around the pits looking for the hot soup stand and Dave is making sure his Yamaha pit Jacket is on straight, My toes were freezing but I didn’t have to worry to much about that as they went numb about 20 seconds later. Riders briefing gets done and we are all let loose on the track, Imagine if you will, a start straight that made it hard to see the first turn it was that far away, big fast open corners and a track that was taking the pros just under 2 minutes’ to do a lap, throw in a sunny day (still bloody cold!) and the wonderful sound of bikes being thrashed to within a inch of their life and not to mention the odd howling 2 stroke 500 as well, one of which was mine, but I was doing most of the howling due to a pant staining tank slappa. Which had me thinking “ I leave my pet turtle to my brother, don’t sell any of my bikes, being of solid mind and weak bladder..” you get the picture.

We had 3 rounds of racing on Saturday that with out a word of a lie was some of the most fun I have ever had on a bike. If you haven’t been to this event I strongly suggest to come and give it a go. Loamy soft dirt corners, the odd small fast jump there and not forgetting the balls to the wall start straight we came through each lap. There were the odd crash here and there with the boys but luckily none were too bad that would stop us all having a laugh about it at the end of the day. The biggest mission was trying to repack the trailer at the end of day one. We were using Shane’s trailer and there was a system we had to use to get 3 bikes in, all our gear, fuel cans, ezy ups, boots and Jimmy Hoffa’s body was jammed in there too I think one of the funnier things was seeing Shane wrestling with a table that he had somehow managed to jam in there too, after trying every which way to make it fit I though at one point he was going to get a run up and launch both him and the damn table in as one. The F word was being used a lot.

After getting back to the unit and a hot shower being more in demand than a bottle of baby oil and that hot Chick from the Pussy Cat doll's we were all enjoying a big roast meal thanks to the in house restaurant and as always the stories of the days racing come out, Chris Bailey was there and had most of us in fits of laughter, the guy is one of the funniest people I know. With some more in house entertainment, (what happens on tour stays on tour) it was time to hit the sack again.

Sunday Moring, Did I mention I am not a morning person? Sitting having some brekkie I hear I bang outside the unit, Jeremy Hughes sticks his head in laughing say the his brother Glenn started his Ute to warm it up but forgot it was in gear and hit the back of the room, love your work Glenn, Once again we are back at the track and I still can’t feel my toes, the track had been groomed but was still going to cut up again, but with about 400 or 500 bikes going over it all day that is just the way it is. With getting through so many races on the Saturday we had 2 rounds to go on this day, which worked out well for all the guys who had a lot of travelling to do to get home.

With the event being so well run and everyone having a ball (Shane W in one race was riding the best he had all year, and that’s in his own words, he was hauling!) and feeling that this was one of my better efforts as well it was over, Check out the photos on the website to see what you are missing. The day ends with Moto GP on the box, a chilly bin fill of beers, a heater going and hot pizzas to top it off. With all the boys feeling suitably stuffed after such a awesome weekend the cradle didn’t take much rocking that night, I want to say to the boys thanks’ for making it one of those weekends that you will talk about for a long time, and also Ian for getting it all set up for us once again.

And if I don’t get a prize when I pick up my license next year I am just going to steal Dave’s one, then it shall be I who will skip back to the truck, oh yes,

See you at the races, 996.

2011 SENIOR MOTOCROSS CHAMPIONSHIP DATES CONFIRMED
SENIOR MOTOCROSS CHAMPIONSHIP DATES CONFIRMED Following their meeting in Wellington on July 17th, Motorcycling New Zealand’s Motocross Commission has finalised the dates for next season’s Championships. The season will move to February/March 2011. This change has been driven for the following reasons: With better and more settled weather, we hope to encourage more public to attend and give the sponsors better value for their money and wider exposure for their brand With new bikes arriving later and later in the year. By moving to early in the year the Industry will all have their new bikes in the country. For the Clubs/volunteers who make these events happen, more public through the gate equates to better revenue for all their hard work For the Riders, they will have the opportunity to train with the benefit of summer and daylight saving, rather than going into the Championships from the depths of winter. An added advantage with the moving of the MX Championships is it will enable the Supercross season to run prior to the MX season and will also assist in aligning the New Zealand MX/SX seasons with our Australian neighbours. Senior MX Championships: Round 1 ~ Sunday February 20th ~ South Canterbury Motorcycle Club Round 2 ~ Sunday March 6th ~ Patetonga Motorcycle Club Round 3 ~ Sunday March 20th ~ Rotorua Motorcycle Club Round 4 ~ Sunday March 27th ~ Taranaki Motorcycle Club Prepared for Motorcycling New Zealand Inc.
