NEW ZEALAND NEWS

MOTORCYCLE INDUSTRY NEWS

The recession is ongoing and now the analysts are warning of a double dip. All of us have felt the effects in some way.

In Vol.200 I said "there are two announcements imminent, effecting two brands that will have major repercussions on the industry. As we only release at the end of the business week we normally miss the scoops but believe me one in particular, is very big news."

That big news is that Paul Ottaway has gone from KTM. The rumour that NZ is reduced to a staff of just two - one in admin and the other in the warehouse is not correct - there will be a total of four. NZ will be run from Australia by KTM Australia's General Manager, Jeff Leisk. Leisk is well known in MX circles. Amongst his many MX titles is one from 1989 when he came 2nd in the World 500cc Championship (on a Honda) in what is now the MX3.

It was back on 09 February this year that Yamaha Motor New Zealand announced they had appointed leading car industry manager Wallis Dumper to head up its motorcycle, ATV and SSV sales team. Dumper has just resigned and finishes at the end of the month. He is returning to Subaru as CEO for New Zealand. He had previously been with Subaru for ten years before a sojourn with the Land Rover, Jaguar and Volvo brands. Subaru have a very potent, all new, 2011 WRX STI coming in both 3 and 5 doors.

This is up on the Honda website: www.honda-motorcycles.co.nz/newsItem.asp?newsId=1021

"After dominating wins in the 2009/10 Motocross season and making plenty of noise on the Road Racing scene, Blue Wing Honda is now ready to announce a new-look formation for its 2011 Race Programme, across both Motocross and Road Racing teams. Raced and serviced from the Blue Wing Honda Racing Truck, new Honda MX and Superbike teams will sit under the new 'Honda Dealer Team' banner at all 2010/11 season events.

Both Honda Dealer Team, MX and Honda Dealer Team, Superbike will be managed by Paul Stewart from Blue Wing Honda. Full Honda Dealer/Rider team combinations will be announced imminently, following finalisation of contracts by Blue Wing Honda.

'Honda Dealer Team, MX' will contest in Motocross events including all four National Championship events, Woodville MX Grand Prix, the Auckland Champs, Whakatane MX and the two international Supercross events.

Two riders will defend the MX1 450 championship titles won in 2009 by Justin McDonald on a Honda CRF450R, and two riders will defend the MX2 250 championship title won in 2009 by Michael Phillips on a Honda CRF250R.

Plus, in a new initiative by Blue Wing Honda, substantial prize money will now be up for grabs at specified events, as part of a scheme to reward the highest placed Honda riders, whether they are a Honda Dealer Team, or privateer competitors.

Team specifics will be announced in a separate press release, but if you would like to discuss the formation of Honda's new 2011 Race Team, please contact Blue Wing Honda."

Frankly, apart from the intro of prize money and a name change it's a nothing statement. I used to look after Honda Racing's media and 'went' as part of a budget pull-back in February last year and then their Marketing Manager Anthony MacLean also disappeared. Also no comment on Shayne King. Curious that elsewhere on their website they still list: Cameron Dillon, Michael Phillips, Justin McDonald and Peter Broxholme.

ENDURO / CROSS COUNTRY

Chris Power wins the Australian 24 Hr Enduro.... ON A YAMAHA WR !!!

Edited copy courtesy of Greg Power.

Called a Reliability Trial but run exactly the same as an Enduro with 48 Special Tests over 24 Hrs.

4 x 200 km laps.
3 Fuel Stops per 200 km lap
12 Special Stages per lap.
32 Controls (Checks) per lap
Riders had to carry everything they needed except for Fuel, oil and air filters.
All work on the bike had to be done by the rider only
All tools had to be carried by the rider
There were over 200 riders, 20 of whom had sidecars
Chris started at 1305 on Saturday afternoon finishing at 1305 Sunday afternoon and the reality was that Chris laid down a solid foundation from the first lap. After crashing then missing a marker in the first Special Stage, Chris did some blistering special stage times to win the first lap by over a minute. He also won both night laps by over a minute each and recorded 3rd equal on the final lap ending in a 2 min 36 sec win.

His crash on the final lap was memorable. Jumping a 5 metre gap (1.5m deep) that had no take off ramp and no chance to check out before hitting it blind, Chris cleared it three of the four laps (twice in the dark - I guess you don't see the danger in the dark) but failed on the final lap. Maybe a little tired - who knows. A big endo witnesses by many who were congregating at the gap as there were several ambulance rides during the night when riders miscalculated. Chris was the first and only rider to jump it every time. Only one other even attempted it.

During the night, the weariness set in and maintenance was becoming a problem. Chris was so tired he started missing little things. The crew could point things out but not do the work themselves. Like: Loose bolts, kinked throttle cable, loose chain, etc. All minor but things that if not fixed immediately would have caused majors later in the race. With over 300 volunteers running this event, it is something else.

Thanks to Yamaha South Australia and especially Rob who set the bike up. Thanks also to Peter Payne from Yamaha NZ who brokered the deal.

Race brief ... from Paul Whibley from OMA Round 5, Mesick, Michigan

Edited copy from Paul Whibley. Note now on the 2010 YZ450F not the WR.

With the go ahead to start testing and development of the YZ for racing full time in 2011, I lined up with the 450 MX'er at the latest OMA. An average start and dusty conditions gave me a big challenge to work my way back to the front. The first few miles it was soo dusty, all I could do was to stay on track. When we moved into the tighter fresh tracks I was able to pick up some of the slack and latch back onto the guys in front. Picking guys off whenever the chance was presented, I worked my way forward and within 3 laps moved into the lead when I passed Thad Duvall on the side of the track.

I came in for fuel at the end of the third lap and had began to build a small lead over Scotty Watkins who was now running second. The track got better as the race wore on with the sand based soil forming some nice lines through the trees. As the race continued I was also able to get a good feeling with the YZ in the trees and appreciate its balance and nimbleness in threading through the tight woods. I continued to put in safe laps and pushed my lead out to over a minute.

The YZ performed great and passed its first test with ease. I'm looking forward to getting back into the points battle for the OMA title. With 5 rounds still to go and only a handful more points to make up I'm confident we can make it an exciting close to the season. Front Tire, Kenda Southwick. Rear Tire, Kenda Millville.

KAYNE LAMONT WINS AT PONTRILAS

Edited copy from the MCFederation. Written by Jeff Perrett.

Following on from two back to back rounds at Silverstone and Whitby the Red Bull Pro Nationals moved to Howton Court, Pontrilas last weekend for Round 6 of the Championship. The Red Bull Pro Nationals, which also incorporate the Fuchs-Silkolene 2 Stroke championship and Red Bull Elite Youth Cup are really capturing the imagination of the British public as well as the more hardened motocross fans.

The beautiful Howton Court circuit etched into the hillside just outside of Pontrilas in Herefordshire looked every bit the part as the MC Federation once again rolled in with an array of colour to give the place that real sense of event. They had their work cut out with track preparations this time out though. We may well be getting some decent tanning and beach weather but with it comes dry land and the Howton Court circuit needed thousands of gallons of water to keep the dust down and generate a good racing circuit, good job the race got on before a hose pipe ban! Intensive watering started a few days before the event and the first few dousings just seemed to disappear in no time as the track soaked it up like a sponge. It was almost drought like conditions.

Luckily the same cannot be said about the action in the Red Bull Pro Nationals of late as we've been spoilt with a prolonged downpour of the best racing action this country has seen for a good few years. With the pros, the Fuchs-Silkolene 2 Stroke British championship and the Red Bull Elite Youth Cup all thrown together over two days of action the Red Bull Pro Nationals are definitely changing the face of British motocross and Pontrilas proved that yet again.

There was 300 plus riders in 10 classes racing over two days. Jeff Perrett wrote about each class. Here is what he had to say about Kayne's class.

The Fuchs-Silkolene 125cc British championship riders rolled out onto a well soaked track on Sunday to cut the lines for the day and Kiwi racer Kayne Lamont laid down his intentions for the day setting the quickest time in qualifying on his Suzuki GB ride. It was the New Zealander's first ever Fuchs-Silkolene event and he got straight down to business as he won the opening moto to back it up, and he wasn't even racing the Rookie class too! Series leader David Willet proved why they call him 'Iron Man' in the second moto though as he wore down Kayne to take that one but he had no answers for the Kiwi in the final moto as he romped away with the win, the overall and more annoyingly for Willet £300 more than him as he exasperated on the podium. Defending champion Jim Davies proved why he has the #1 on his TM with an incredibly gutsy display as he rode through the pain of severe ankle and foot ligament damage and possibly broken bones after getting his foot caught in Will Worden's wheel in the Open class the day before. After going to hospital he came back to ride and actually had to use crutches to get on the podium. Fair play to Jim on some good old fashion grit!!

Several well known names in this list of winners at Pontrilas.

Red Bull Pro Nationals MX1 Brad Anderson - PAR Honda
Red Bull Pro Nationals MX2 Martin Barr - PAR Honda
Red Bull Elite Youth Cup Rookies Jake Shipton - Poole Yamaha
Red Bull Elite Youth Cup BW James Harrison - Twisted 7 Honda
Red Bull Elite Youth Cup SW Todd Kellett - Suzuki
Red Bull Elite Youth Cup 65cc Ryan Vickers - Cobra UK
Fuchs Silkolene 2 Stroke Open Expert Ben Lamay - Samsung Yamaha
Fuchs Silkolene 2 Stroke 125cc Expert Kayne Lamont - Suzuki GB
Fuchs Silkolene 2 Stroke Open Junior Corey Nemeth - Honda
Fuchs Silkolene 2 Stroke 125cc Junior Charles Statt - Kawasaki

RACE BRIEF ... FROM KAYNE LAMONT.

Edited copy from Stu Lamont - Kayne's Dad.

Pontrilas was the track that Kayne rode when we first arrived here and he was really looking forward to competing on it again. Kayne had entered into the Rookies class, which has five races over Saturday and Sunday and also the Pro-national 125 class on Sunday. In the Rookie class you can ride either 125, 250 2-stroke or 250- 4 stroke and Pontrilas is a real horsepower track, which means his 125 will have to be on the pipe to stay with the larger capacity bikes. This track starts off extremely wet then to very dry hard pack by the end of the day.

Saturday: Kayne was the first practice and qualifying so the track was extremely wet and muddy and he managed to qualify 5th.

Race 1: He got a reasonable jump out of the gate but got squashed into the fence on the hole shot corner dropping him back down the pack. He passed several riders and got into 8th when he went down losing the front end after hitting a large rock. He got up quickly and was charging back through the pack until another rider fell off in a rut in front of him and having nowhere to go, he went down again. It took some time to get going again and after pushing hard for the final laps he managed to finish 13th.

Race 2: Another reasonable start, 7th around the hole shot corner then 3rd by the next corner and then taking the lead for a couple of laps until a 250 2 stroke passed him on a long uphill straight. Kayne followed the leader for a couple of laps then applied a fair amount of pressure causing the leader to go down, Kayne then went on to take the win (this being the first win for a 125 in the series so far).

Race 3: He got an average start and was unlucky to have another rider go down in front of him and was unable to avoid going down, once again he had to come back through the pack and finished 11th.

Sunday: After some grooming, watering and overnight rain the track again was a mud bath and the Pro-national 125 practice qualifying was up first, this time we took both bikes to do practice then once the lines started to form Kayne changed to his race bike to do his qualifying. He set a blistering lap, 7 seconds faster than anyone else, which was reduced to 4 seconds by the end of qualifying.

His first Pro-national 125 race was up first and then he had the Rookies back to back which was going to be a big ask with the quality of both fields.

125 Race 1: Kayne got the holeshot and was in an intense battle with the lead swapping several times throughout the first couple of laps and Kayne settled in second applying a lot of pressure on the leader. The leader went down and Kayne went on to take the win. This kept the crowd and commentators entertained throughout the entire race.

Rookies Race 4: After having a quick drink and a banana Kayne got a reasonable start and worked his way up to 5th place where he finished. Kayne was struggling with stomach cramps throughout the race and was feeling quite ill by the end of that race.

125 Race 2: After a sleep between moto's Kayne rocked up to the start line still not feeing the best but got the holeshot and lead until the second to last lap we he had trouble passing lappers. He put in a concerted effort to try and take the lead but couldn't maintain the pace of the leader and settled for 2nd.

Still not feeling the best we decided not to ride the final Rookies race and concentrate on the 125 race.

125 Race 3: Going into this final race Kayne was even on points with another rider so whoever won this race would win the overall for the day. Kayne got the holeshot and put in a couple of quick laps and his closest rival was held up trying to pass in second which gave Kayne a 7 second lead. Kayne maintained the gap and when second tried to close the gap he put in another couple of quick laps to end up winning by 10 - 12 seconds.

The racing this weekend was very intense and with the high quality fields, to come away with the win in the Pro-national 125 was a good boost for Kayne's confidence. He had to dig deep to complete the day on top and showed good fitness; he also finished 7th in the Rookies completing 4 of the 5 races. Once again the crowd was supporting him all weekend with many coming to talk to us, as they were very impressed with his speed. We now have a weekend off and then compete in Maxiss British Champs in Foxhills the following weekend.

Slovenian win for Carlos Campano

Edited copy courtesy of Youthstream.

Orehova Vas (Slovenia): Carlos Campano (Team Yamaha Andalucia) won ninth round for the FIM MX3 World Championship in Slovenia and took 15 points in front of Alex Salvini (Husqvarna Cross 2 R) who was third. Home rider Matevz Irt (Husqvarna Tecno B) finished second.

It was another very hot racing weekend. The track was great as well as the ambience. The weekend started with the pole position of Carlos Campano and finished with his win. Matevz Irt from Slovenia took the lead in the first heat. He could not hold Campano behind and Yamaha rider passed him. Campano made some advantage in front of Irt and then Michael Staufer (Austria) came very close to Irt. But he gave up because Irt was riding to fast. Alex Salvini had a bad start and also a crash after put him behind the top. Salvini could not compete with Campano for the win because he noticed troubles with his Husqvarna bike. Salvini finished fifth so already after the first race Campano raised advantage in the Championship classification.

In the second race Irt took the lead again, this time in front of another Slovene rider Saso Kragelj (Kragelj Racing). Crowd around the track was screaming of enthusiasm while two home riders were riding on the top. But Campano was coming from the back. When he passed almost all the riders he was fighting with Irt for the first position and he was successful. Campano won in front of Irt. Salvini had better second heat but he was not too satisfied with the third place because he lost some more points to Campano.

Campano won with 50 points. Second was Matevz Irt and third Alex Salvini. The advantage of Campano is now 15 points and it is the first time this season that they are apart for more than seven points. Matevz Irt improved his position in the Championship classification and progressed back to third place. Martin Zerava is fourth and Milko Potisek stays fifth in the Championship.

Championship Standings:

1st. Carlos Campano Jiminez (ESP, Yamaha) 396 points
2nd. Alex Salvini (ITA, Husqvarna) 381
3rd. Matevz Irt (SLO, Husqvarna) 293
4th. Martin Zerava (CZE, Honda) 291
5th. Milko Potisek (FRA, Honda) 245

EMX2 European Championship

Edited copy courtesy of Youthstream.

Klemen Gercar (Axo KTM Silver Action) is a winner of his home EMX2 European Championship round. Steven Lenoir (Vamo Racing) was second in front of third Valentin Guillod (KTM Swiss).

It was a great race for Slovenian fans, which were supporting riders all around the track. Their rider Klemen Gercar won twice. In first heat Valentin Guillod took the holeshot in front of Gercar. He was faster in a fight of two KTM riders and passed Guillod. Swiss rider was still trying to take back the lead and he was pushing on Gercar which was too fast for him. Steven Lenoir finished third.

Pier Filippo Bertuzzo (Massignani Racing) started first in front of Peter Irt in the second heat. But there came Gercar again and took the lead. Gercar was riding convincingly so that Bertuzzo could not take the first place. French rider Steven Lenoir was third again.

Gercar, who finished third in the EMX2 Championship last year won the round of Orehova vas in front of Steven Lenoir and Valentin Guillod. Leading riders of the Championship Andrea Cervellin and Jernej Irt (both Husqvarna Cross 2 R) did not finish on the podium. Irt was fourth and Cervellin sixth. Cervellin remains on the top of the Championship. Steven Lenoir overtook Jernej Irt on the second place for three points. Guillod progressed to fourth position.

Xavier Boog IS THE French MX1 Champion

Edited copy courtesy of Pascal Haudiquert.

There was no real surprise in Iffendic for the penultimate round of the French Elite Championship, as even before the first practice session Xavier was sure to be champion. At 22 years old, the KRT rider from Colmar conquered his first French title.

On the podium of the six rounds, winner of ten heats and on the podium of all the others except the first one in Pernes, Xavier had a successful season in the French Pro Series that he competes in for the first time after so many seasons in the German series. Second in the standings before this event with a gap of 89 points, Anthony Boissière was the last rival who could mathematically beat him; but after his injury in Sweden he didn't raced Iffendic, so Xavier was sure to be Champion in Brittany.

He qualified in 4th, crashed whilst leading the race and got a stone jammed in his brake pedal. Xavier was twice runner-up behind Nicolas Aubin on Sunday. Coming to the last race with huge determination, he grabbed his second consecutive holeshot and pushed to win at least one heat in Brittany. He lost the lead when he made a mistake in the first part of the race, but then passed back Aubin to win his tenth moto despite Aubin's pressure.

Xavier Boog: "I had some troubles this weekend to take a good rhythm, may be because I was already Champion before the races, I don't know. I was not confident on this track, the bike was sliding and I didn't want to take any risk. I came to the last race with a stronger motivation, as I wanted to win at least one heat; I got the holeshot and was leading the race when I crashed. The engine didn't stop but Aubin passed me and I had to pass him again to win. It was a good weekend, the French title was one of my goals and now I will try to get this podium that everyone in the team is expecting but first of all I take a short break and will go home for a week with my family, then I will be back in Belgium to prepare Lommel which will be a tough event."

KEN ROCZEN WINS GERMAN CHAMPIONSHIP

Edited copy courtesy of the Team Suzuki Press Office.

Teka Suzuki Europe World MX2's Ken Roczen ended four consecutive weeks of racing by comfortably winning the fourth round of eight in the 2010 German ADAC MX Masters championship at Prisannewitz at the weekend.

The venue near the city of Rostock saw the team make their competitive debut at the hard-pack track and Roczen went 1-1 in spite of temperatures touching almost 40 degrees.

The 16 year old suffered a crash in the first exchanges of the opening moto and embarked on a superb charge on his RM-Z250 from outside the top 20 to seize the lead entering the final two laps. In the second race he fronted the pack by the fourth circulation and pulled away without hindrance to take the chequered flag by 15 seconds.

Winner of the German round of the FIM Women's World Championship, Larissa Papenmeier, again acquitted herself with aplomb in male company and qualified for the Youngster Cup class on her RM-Z250; the second time she has achieved such a feat. Arnaud Tonus elected not to contest the meeting and wanted a break after successive Grand Prix events in Germany, Latvia and Sweden.

"This was the first time we had race at Prisannewitz. It was a well-organised meeting and pretty hard for the riders because of the hot weather," said Team Manager Thomas Ramsbacher. "Ken rode well and was almost three seconds a lap quicker than anyone else at one point. He was pushing and it was good to watch. Larissa also qualified again for the youngster cup and that was another important moment for her. Next weekend we will have a small break before starting to think about Lommel."

Roczen now leads the competition by 10 points over Filipe Neugebauer. Teka Suzuki Europe World MX2 will enter round five of their national series at Tensfeld in two weeks before rounds 11 and 12 of the FIM World Championship at Lommel (Belgium) and Loket (Czech Republic) on August 1st and 8th respectively.

ROCKSTAR TEKA SUZUKI has two PODIUMS IN BELGIUM

Edited copy courtesy of the Team Suzuki Press Office.

The Rockstar Teka Suzuki World MX1 team dominated a sweltering third round of six in the Belgian MX Pro Championship at Tongeren: Clement Desalle sealed the triumph by going 1-2 in the two motos on his works RM-Z450WS while Steve Ramon rode to third and first positions to clinch second overall and front the series standings by 24 points.

An undisputed day of action for the Belgian team began with the fastest times in practice for Desalle and Ramon respectively as the temperatures rapidly began to climb. Belgian Champion Desalle - who is splitting national championship commitments between his home country and Germany this season - chased down Tanel Leok in the first moto across the natural and narrow course and his pressure was rewarded when the Estonian made a mistake and crashed. Ramon followed through in third with Davide Guarneri for company.

In the second race Desalle again found himself following a pacemaker but found it easier to dispatch of holeshotter Marc de Reuver. Later into the distance, Ramon picked up his speed and harried his team-mate to move through for his fourth moto victory from six. Ramon has not dropped out of the top three yet in the domestic campaign.

"It was a good day; hard work in the heat but also quite good fun," said winner and reigning number one Desalle. "They had made some changes to the track and I felt OK. Steve was faster in the second moto though. I did not want to take any risks and when he came past I could see that he had some good lines. Anyway, I had the win and no crashes so overall I'm happy."

The team will now enjoy a break after a busy spell of the season and their home Grand Prix of Limburg at Lommel will follow on August 1st.

Simpson receives treatment for blood deficiencies

Red Bull KTM factory rider Shaun Simpson has undergo a series of medical tests in an attempt to identify the source of the problem that has left the twenty-two year old suffering from severe fatigue over the last month.

Despite taking a full week of rest ahead of the Swedish Grand Prix last weekend, the young Scot once again endured a below par and frustrating weekend. Whilst Simpson undergoes blood tests on a regular basis as part of his strict training regime, no one was fully aware of the extent of the problem that had besieged the KTM teamster prior to more thorough investigations earlier this week. Shaun is still awaiting full test results, which will be available later this week, but has already received confirmation that his blood shows signs of major deficiency of certain elements that could relate directly to the symptom's he has been suffering over more recent weeks.

In the short term Shaun has been prescribed specific medication that should take effect over the next couple of weeks as he fights to be back in good shape for the Grand Prix of Limburg at Lommel, Belgium on 01 August.

JOEL Smets announces MXoN pre-selection

Edited copy courtesy of Youthstream written by Tom Jacobs.

Joël Smets has just released the names of the seven pre-selected riders of whom three will represent Belgium at the 2010 Red Bull Motocross of Nations in the US. The pre-selection includes: Clément Desalle, Steve Ramon, Ken De Dycker, Kevin Strijbos, Jeremy Van Horebeek, Dennis Verbruggen and Joël Roelants.

Clearly team manager Smets is facing some tough choices before the final team is made public. That final selection for the 64th Motocross of Nations will be announced on Sunday, August 15 during the fourth round of the MX Pro Series at Keiheuvel-Balen. Last year the Belgian squad with Desalle, Ramon and Roelants took an honourable third behind the U.S. and France. Last year there was a lot of commotion following the non-selection of Ken De Dycker. De Dycker himself even stated that he never wanted to ride for Team Belgium again?

Joël Smets: "Obviously that statement was made 'in the heat of battle'. Since then we have discussed about our argument and Ken made it clear that he understood the reasons behind my choice. At the German GP a couple weeks ago I enjoyed a short but good conversation with him. I absolutely don't hold that outburst from last year against him. Actually it shows that Ken cares about the MX of Nations and wants to be a part of the Belgian Team. In other words, it's a good thing. The only certainty is Clément Desalle. Since his shoulder injury he's reaching his best level again. Ramon has been blowing hot and cold and he has dealt with minor injuries. As a result he has had trouble to train consistently for two weeks in a row. Ken is in a similar situation: too many ups and downs. But in spite of his bike set-up issues and small injury problems he showed in Teutschenthal that his speed is still there. For the MX2 rider we're facing an important rule-change this year. The MX2 rider must be younger than 23. This means we can no longer consider the option to pick for example Steve Ramon for the MX2 class. As for Jeremy (Van Horebeek) and Joël (Roelants), they are a close match. Similar to the Dycker and Ramon. Potentially Van Horebeek has showed the best speed of the two, but in recent weeks Roelants felt victim to injuries and he couldn't ride at his best level. Anyhow, all riders now have two very important GP's with Lommel and Loket to convince me. It's up to them to earn their spot on the team."

The Belgian team has won the MX of Nations 14 times and with 53 rostrum finishes Belgium has the highest number of podium finishes.

Pre selection of the French Team

Edited copy from Daniele Rizzi for Youthstream.

The pre-selection for the French MXoN Team has unveiled a strong line up of racers: Xavier Boog, Anthony Boissiere, Steven Frossard, Marvin Musquin, Gautier Paulin, Christophe and Sebastien Pourcel are the ones coach Olivier Robert pre-selected.

22 year old Boog has never raced a Motocross of Nations but has been performing really good in this first year he is spending in the FIM World MX1 Championship class with the factory Kawasaki team. He is currently sixth in the series points.

Other MX1 debutant Boissiere is 24 and is eager to make up for the tyre problem affecting him at the Red Bull FIM Motocross of Nations in Donington in 2008, when France took second on the podium. Boissiere will be on a factory TM and is currently 13th in the series.

22 year old Frossard has just won his maiden Grand Prix in Sweden to become tied in points with FIM World MX2 series runner up Roczen. Frossard, who rides the factory 250 Kawasaki, made his maiden appearance at the Red Bull FIM MXoN last year in Franciacorta.

Musquin instead is the current dominator of the MX2 class as well as the 2009 MX2 World Champion. The likeable French is just 20 years old and seems to be the most probable candidate for the MX2 class at the Red Bull FIM MXoN in America. Musquin is part of the factory KTM team and has 13 GP wins to his credit.

Paulin is also racing in the MX2 class but an early season injury kept him out of the battle field until the fifth Grand Prix. Having taken his first season podium in Sweden, the 20 year old was at the MXoN last year in Franciacorta where he won a heat but crashed in his last one - he was riding on a 450cc machine for his first time ever. Now Paulin steers the works Yamaha.

Sebastien Pourcel is one of France's fastest riders but has been experiencing a troubled season so far. The factory Kawasaki rider in the FIM MX1 World Championship was hampered by crashes and injuries but is expected to be back on track soon for a strong season's finale. The 25 year old is in the French team since 2004 but has just missed the 2005 and 2009 events.

His brother Christophe was at the event only in 2006, the year he became MX2 World Champion. The 21 year old has recovered from a severe back injury from the 2007 season to land in the USA and conquer two AMA Supercross Titles with the Pro Circuit Kawasaki.

As coach Olivier Robert says, this team aims at winning the event this year after several podiums in the latest years. Due to the age limit, the only candidates for the MX2 class are Musquin, Frossard or Paulin - Christophe Pourcel expressed the wish to be on a 450. Furthermore Frossard and Paulin could also race on a 450cc machine as they did in 2009 in Italy, showing solid performances despite not being used to the bigger bore engine.

Everts & Friends Program update

The circuit of Horensbergdam in Genk is the venue of the 5th edition of the 'Everts & Friends Charity Race'. This unique motocross event will take place on 21 July, National Day of Belgium. As the event's name indicates, all profits will go to charity.

Stefan Everts, tenfold World Champion and currently Race Director for KTM, takes on the challenge with his colleagues from MX1 and MX2 classes for this event exclusively. Another star guest is of course two-fold World Champion Sébastien Tortelli, taking a short leave from his US-based 'Champ Factory Motocross School' and flying over for this occasion. Tortelli's presence offers a rare opportunity to see him in action again and many fans undoubtedly will not have forgotten his 1998 MX2 World title after a heroic battle with Everts in Megalopolis (Greece).

Also on the participants list: Clement Desalle (Suzuki), Ken De Dycker (Yamaha), Max Nagl (KTM), Tanel Leok (Honda), Rui Goncalves (KTM), Manuel Priem (Aprilia), Jeremy Van Horebeek (Kawasaki), Jeffrey Herlings (KTM), Joël Roelants (KTM), Shaun Simpson (KTM), Arnaud Tonus (Suzuki), Johan Boonen, Eddy Seel, Kevin Wouts, Kenny Vandueren, Mike Vanderstraeten,... and Benoit Pauwels, the well-known 'one-armed racer'.

Confirmations of other GP stars for the 'Everts & Friends Charity Race' are expected in due time. Five-fold World Champion Joël Smets and three-fold Dakar Winner Cyril Despres have already agreed to compete in the 'GP Stars' series at the Horensbergdam. And not to be missed: multiple cyclocross champion Sven Nys takes up the motorcross challenge! Current MX 1 World Champion Antonio Cairoli has also confirmed his presence but will decide on the spot upon his taking part in the races.

In the 'Ladies' class fans can look forward to World Champion Stephanie Laier among others.

In the 'Golden Heroes' class, the stars of Eric 'Mr. 875' Geboers, André Vromans, Neil Hudson, Graham Noyce, Marc Velkeneers and rally champion Freddy Loix will shine once again. And what's more: Stefan Everts is still in talks with former champions Dave Thorpe (World Champion 500cc 1985, 1986 and 1989) and Danny LaPorte (the first American World Champion 250cc, 1982).

Future Stars vs GP Stars: Two series in which GP Stars (MX1/MX2) start from the second row, behind the young 'Future Stars'. All participants are obliged to ride a 85cc bike.

Ladies Chase: A clash between GP Stars and the Ladies. The MX1 and MX2 riders. The Ladies start with one round ahead and it is up to the GP Stars to chase the ladies!

Wrong Way Pitstop Race: Another round of 'tug of war' between the 'Ladies' and the 'GP Stars' (who start from the second row). This time, they ride the racing circuit in the opposite direction. In addition, the GP Stars have to make a pitstop during which they have to change the rear tire.

Americano: An exciting knock-out race for the 'GP Stars'. After each round, the last two or three riders are knocked out. Ultimately, two surviving Stars battle for the win in two final rounds.

Golden Heroes: Two 'classic' series, twelve minutes + 1 round each in which the 'Golden Heroes' battle each other on oldtimer bikes.

Liam and Friends: Liam, Stefan's five-year old son and a skilful BMX-rider already, will showcase his promising talent on his little PW-bike. Together with his friends he will race a few rounds on a mini-circuit in and around the starting zone during the break.

Show for Charity: In addition to the fun on the race circuit, there will also be lots to discover on the rest of the grounds. The paddock and teamtrucks will be conveniently arranged in U-shape, there is a kids area (bouncy castle, trampolines, grime...) and a huge 'fan party' in the party tent. The Freestyle 'FMX4ever' Team of Jimmy Verburgh will display some more high air fun in between and after the races. And last but not least: a signing session with the World Championship's Stars will be held during the break.

The winner of the 'Future Stars' class receives the Stefan Everts trophy, a stone-carved replica of 'The Legend's' last air cooled engine, fully equipped with kickstarter and spark plug.

Joël Robert, Sylvain Geboers and Harry Everts - together totalling ten World Championship titles - will most exclusively mount their bikes one more time for a lap of honour.

David Philippaerts and Gautier Paulin Re-SIGN WITH YAMAHa.

Edited copy courtesy of Yamaha Motor Europe

The Italian and Frenchman will extend their current association with the Italian set-up with the factory Yamaha Monster Energy Motocross Team for the 2011 FIM MX-GP World Championship.

Philippaerts will be aiming to recapture the MX1-GP title he secured in his first season with Yamaha in 2008 while Paulin is slated to attempt the MX2-GP series in which he was primed to be a major protagonist this term until an unfortunate pre-season leg break caused him to miss the first four rounds.

Philippaerts gave the new and innovative rear-slating YZ450FM its debut Grand Prix win last month in France and is currently third in the world championship table with four podium appearances from the ten rounds run so far. The 25 year old has also grabbed two pole positions. Paulin has been building up to speed since his return at the Catalan round in mid-May and grabbed his first silverware (and for the team since they last contested the MX2-GP category in 2005) with third position on the YZ250FM last week in Sweden.

MARKUS BAU BLOGs about the Teka Suzuki Europe World MX2 team

Markus Bau is the CEO of Teka and the owner of the Teka Suzuki Europe World MX2 team as well as a major partner in the Rockstar Teka Suzuki World MX1 crew. Edited copy and Photo courtesy of the Team Suzuki Press Office.

"I used to ride motocross when I was younger and still try to now when I have time. It means I can appreciate the sport and I know a little bit about the technical demands and what a rider needs. This also explains why I take a great deal of personal interest in the teams and why I take it upon myself to personally manage some matters. We have been involved in other sports at the top level, in football and cycling, and knew that we needed someone inside the sport.

"You have moments in your life when two or three people come together at the right moment and this was how it began for Teka and motocross. I was asked if something could be put together and I thought 'why not' and we started in a small way. Later on we found a good co-operation with GRP (Geboers Racing Promotion) and they wanted to increase the partnership. Suzuki wanted to start the MX2 project with Ken Roczen and because we knew of Ken we said 'OK'. I like motocross but we also get results through our sponsorship in our sales.

"The link with GRP and being based in Belgium is important. The MX2 team is essentially German but is based in Lommel so that the vital association, especially on the technical side, can be made. We are surrounded by a lot of knowledge and experience and this helped towards the good results in the past and now the present.

"The MX2 team is very young and we are still growing. This year we have a completely new bike and I think we are becoming very competitive. I am extremely pleased with Arnaud Tonus and his results. If you see where he was this time last year and now he is always in the top 10 and it is clear he is making a good job and has established himself; everybody knows who he is and he has made a big step forward. I think in 2011 he has the possibility to be in the top five.

"With Ken we also have to be happy because he is second in the championship but he has been missing some luck; this will come back though. I don't think we can do any more at the moment. We have a good bike, good riders and a good team, and this is the situation also in MX1. I am very happy with Desalle. I have known him for eight years, and knew - when he was just a boy - that he had potential. We had done some work with him in the past for the national championship and it was the right decision to pick him up for 2010.

"Ramon has also been doing well, especially to come back from his injury last year. It was important for us to keep him contracted for a second season, not just for the points he wins, but so that people can see that if a rider has a bad time or very bad luck then we are not just going to kick him out. We don't only look at the results but also the base, support and the family aspect of the teams and that things work well. A rider has to have the right insurance, papers and set-up. He should not just have a good package on the bike but also away from the track and on paper because this is a risky sport. I think we are doing the right things because a lot of riders want to talk with us about 2011 and the perception of our teams is positive.

"For us [Teka] we of course are also dealing with a recession situation but we will proceed in the next years with the two teams and I hope we can pick up one title. We want to keep two riders per class and go for quality not quantity. Our main priority is the teams and that the riders have the possibility to give their best; if we win the title then this is OK but it is not our first issue. We want the public to see that we make a good job and Suzuki present an opportunity that can help their sales. The RM-Z250 is excellent this yyyear and I notice a lot more yellow machinery at the test tracks. If there are 10 bikes making laps then perhaps 8 are Suzukis. With our racing we are making a big promotion right now and not just to the other racers out there but for the hobby riders also and this has benefits for both Suzuki and Teka. I hope we can continue to do this in the coming years and we can keep on getting the publicity and the exposure we are getting now.

"A world-wide championship is important to us because we are an international group with global production organisations and to go to places like South America means taking the brand to new markets. Our customers like motocross and coming to a Grand Prix is a new experience for most. At Teutschenthal we had Larissa Papenmeier making a fantastic result and to see the women's world championship is another good way of how motocross can reach other people. Our customers and guests can see how strong the sport is at the races and how hard it is for the athletes, we get good feedback from them about the GP events.

"We had a change of structure in our organisation, especially on the German side, and came more and more into the retail business so it was important to do something for the customer. I was not sure how it would work at the beginning with regards to our customers but the feedback was excellent. Motocross was new, exciting and something they had not experienced before and the best answer we had back was from people was requests to come to the race again the following year. If our customers want it then for sure we stay."

USA NEWS

GOSS FROM RedBud.

The GNCC boys raced at RedBud. GNCC XC1 points leader Josh Strang and XC2 points leader Kailub Russell were there as the GNCC is on Summer break. Strang was 20th in Moto 1 and was 15th in Moto 2 when his foot caught a rut and he twisted an ankle. He pulled out and was given 28th. Kailub Russell had a shocker intro when he crashed on the big ski jump "Alessi Falls," remember that horror crash where Mike ended his 2008 season. In the crash Kailub's bike rolled all the way to the bottom of the hill. In session two he missed the cut saying his suspension was the problem.

Tyla Rattray was at the start for Moto 1 and told the Thor Repr that his race pants were too tight. Hey presto, a new pair and he changed them on the line.

Privateer Scott Champion and his girlfriend, Erin Normoyle (Pit Reporter for the series) were leaving the track late Saturday afternoon Erin swerved to miss a small animal. She lost control of the car and it crossed the lane and hit another car head-on. Tragically, the driver of the other car was killed in the accident. Erin had a compound fracture of her ankle, cracked sternum, and multiple bruising. Champion was knocked around but not admitted to hospital. Erin was at South Bend Memorial, and has had two operations

Valli Motorsports Yamaha rider Ivan Tedesco will make his comeback at the Outdoor National at Milville this weekend. Tedesco was out since suffering pretty devastating internal injuries, along with broken ribs and a broken collarbone. He has prepared himself and feels he's ready to do battle in Milville.

The 2011Kawasaki KX250F has been seriously updated joins the fuel-injected club. Kawasaki has named theirs DFI (Digital Fuel Injection), rather than EFI. As per usual, the fuel injection system monitors air pressure and temperature, as well as the internal water temperature, gear selection, and whether the bike is down or not.

The engine and ignition has also changed. In the transmission, 2nd and 4th gears both get adjustments to better match the power characteristics of the fuel-injected engine. The same goes for the rear sprocket, which was bumped up by two teeth. The shifting mechanism also gets a tune-up with a longer shift stroke, along with a reduced spring tension, and a change in the angle of the ratchet to boost gear engagement.

Suspension and Chassis Changes include the new Showa Separate Function Fork (SFF), which is an exclusive for the Kawasaki. The SFF uses one much larger fork spring in the right leg, and uses the left leg to house a damper that also has a larger volume than before. That means you get a reduction in friction (only one oil seal) by a claimed 25 percent. You also get simpler tuning, with one compression adjuster on top of the fork leg, and one rebound adjuster on the bottom. The top of the caps show the simplified tuning package. Just one compression and rebound to fiddle with and the addition of a new external preload adjuster.

2011 SENIOR MOTOCROSS CHAMPIONSHIP DATES CONFIRMED
SENIOR MOTOCROSS CHAMPIONSHIP DATES CONFIRMED Following their meeting in Wellington on July 17th, Motorcycling New Zealand’s Motocross Commission has finalised the dates for next season’s Championships. The season will move to February/March 2011. This change has been driven for the following reasons: With better and more settled weather, we hope to encourage more public to attend and give the sponsors better value for their money and wider exposure for their brand With new bikes arriving later and later in the year. By moving to early in the year the Industry will all have their new bikes in the country. For the Clubs/volunteers who make these events happen, more public through the gate equates to better revenue for all their hard work For the Riders, they will have the opportunity to train with the benefit of summer and daylight saving, rather than going into the Championships from the depths of winter. An added advantage with the moving of the MX Championships is it will enable the Supercross season to run prior to the MX season and will also assist in aligning the New Zealand MX/SX seasons with our Australian neighbours. Senior MX Championships: Round 1 ~ Sunday February 20th ~ South Canterbury Motorcycle Club Round 2 ~ Sunday March 6th ~ Patetonga Motorcycle Club Round 3 ~ Sunday March 20th ~ Rotorua Motorcycle Club Round 4 ~ Sunday March 27th ~ Taranaki Motorcycle Club Prepared for Motorcycling New Zealand Inc.
